Additionally, the new NVDA 2026.1 update has recently been released. This update changed how add-ons work, causing many older Vocalizer addons for NVDA to stop working. In this article, we will provide a working solution to use Vocalizer Expressive for NVDA for free, even on the latest NVDA 2026.1 version.

Step 1: Download the Vocalizer Expressive Driver
To use these voices, you first need a “Driver.” Think of the driver as a bridge that connects the voices to your NVDA screen reader.
You need to download the vocalizer_expressive_driver which is compatible with the 2026.1 update. This NVDA Vocalizer driver download is an add-on file that adds “Nuance Vocalizer Expressive 2.2” to your synthesizer list.

Step 2: Download the Vocalizer Voices
The driver alone will not produce any sound. You also need to install the specific voice files (like Samantha or Lekha).

Step 3: How to Install Nuance Vocalizer Expressive
Once you have downloaded the driver and at least one voice, follow these steps to install them:
- Open your downloads folder and find the vocalizer_expressive_driver (it will be an .nvda-addon file).
- Press Enter on the file. NVDA will ask if you want to install this add-on. Press Yes.
- NVDA will restart.
- Important Note: After installing the driver, you might not see “Vocalizer” in your speech settings in NVDA immediately. This is because you must install at least one voice file first.
- Now, install your chosen voice file (e.g., Samantha) by pressing Enter on it and confirming the installation.
Step 4: Configuring the Synthesizer
After installing the driver and the voice, you need to switch your screen reader synthesizer.
- Use the keyboard shortcut NVDA + Ctrl + S.
- A list of synthesizers will appear.
- Use the arrow keys to find Nuance Vocalizer Expressive 2.2.
- Press Enter.
Your NVDA should now start speaking with a high-quality, natural human voice!
