If you are a screen reader user, you have likely noticed that using WhatsApp on Windows has become significantly more difficult recently.
With the shift to a WebView2-based architecture—essentially running a web wrapper instead of a native Windows app—many blind and visually impaired users are finding it nearly impossible to navigate.
The app often suffers from focus jumping, unpredictable navigation, and interface elements that are not properly labeled for NVDA or JAWS.
The good news? You don’t have to struggle. By forcing the application into Focus Mode and using a few specific techniques, you can restore a smooth, reliable experience.
Using Focus Mode for WhatsApp
The biggest issue is that screen readers often try to treat the new WhatsApp interface like a standard webpage (using “Browse Mode”). To fix this, you must lock the application into Focus Mode.
How to Enable Focus Mode
- Open your WhatsApp desktop application.
- Wait for it to load fully.
- Press NVDA + Space.
You will hear a distinct “click” sound. This indicates that you are now in Focus Mode.
Note: In this mode, browser-style navigation shortcuts (like H for headings or K for links) will not work.
This is exactly what you want, as it keeps your focus locked inside the WhatsApp interface.
Navigating in Focus Mode
Once in Focus Mode, you can regain control:
Navigate the interface: Use the Tab key to move through the chat list, edit fields, and message areas.
Opening chats: Use Tab to reach your desired conversation in the chat list and press Enter.
Closing chats: Press Escape to close an open conversation and return immediately to the chat list.
Pro-Tips for Advanced Navigation
Managing Context Menus
Since standard shortcuts like Shift + F10 may not trigger correctly in the new version, follow these steps:
- Navigate to the chat or message you want to interact with.
- Press the Right Arrow key to navigate on the interface.
- Look for a button named “Context menu.”
- Press Enter on this button to expand the menu. Here, you will find options like Reply, Copy, Delete, and Forward.
Reacting to Messages
To react to a specific message, follow the same method as above:
- Navigate to the message.
- Use the Right Arrow to locate the “React” button.
- Press Enter, choose your reaction, and confirm.
